The Faculty is seeking to recruit an occupational physician to take the lead role in delivering the Advocacy Strategy that was launched in November 2022. The details of the post are as shown below.

Job Description

General Information

Duration: 3 years fixed term.

Remuneration: The post will attract a fee of €555 per day [€500 + 11% PRSI] to a maximum of €24,420 per year. Travel necessary for carrying out the function of the post will be in compliance with the College Travel Policy with a maximum annual travel of 1500 miles.


Time-spend: The post will require an input equivalent to four days per month over a period of 44 weeks per year.


Location: The post will accommodate working from home or another remote location however the nature of the duties will also require travel to various locations within Ireland and a need to attend meetings both online and in person.


Accountability: The post holder will attend the Advocacy Committee (a sub-group of the Faculty Board) and report directly to the Chair of the Advocacy Committee. The post holder will present formal reports to the Committee which will be provided to the members in advance of each meeting and these reports will be presented by the post holder to the Committee at such meetings.

Requirements

Requirements of the Post


Essential: The post-holder must be either a Member or Fellow of the Faculty in good standing and demonstrate the following:

• the ability to implement the Faculty Advocacy Strategy using lobbying/advocacy approaches involving a range of stakeholder groups/organisations.

• knowledge of the Faculty Advocacy Strategy and the associated actions and out-workings.

• knowledge and experience in target setting, outcomes measurement, evaluation frameworks and research.

• excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to facilitate meetings and give presentations.

• excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build relationships, networks, alliances and work collaboratively with individuals and relevant organisations.

• Ability to engage with others and develop positive and effective working relationships with stakeholders.

• excellent personal and administrative organisational and co-ordination skills.


Desirable: The following are deemed to be desirable attributes, knowledge and skills for the post.

• Experience of working on policy/advocacy in a regional or national policy context.

• Experience of research and analytical skills as evidenced by publications in peer review journals and higher relevant qualifications.


Job Role


General

This post will play a key role in implementing the Faculty’s Advocacy Strategy by developing an action plan in conjunction with the Board and taking this forward so that the Faculty is recognised as a strong voice for raising awareness of the benefits of occupational health within Ireland.

The postholder will provide a first point of contact for the Faculty and stakeholders in the occupational health space in regard to advocacy matters. This will include supporting advocacy initiatives that strengthen the work of the Faculty and assist in developing policy content and contribute to advocacy research activities, as well as support relevant programmes that build success in these strategic areas.

To promote the main goal of universal access to occupational health services by advocating on behalf of the Faculty to national and regional governments, a range of key stakeholders and other decision-makers to ensure occupational health public policy is in place to help reduce health inequity associated with work-related ill health/injury.


Key Responsibilities

▪ Providing a First Point of Contact for all issues related to the Faculty Advocacy Strategy.

▪ Develop and implement the Faculty Advocacy Strategy including the policy, research and advocacy agenda in line with the strategic and action plan.

▪ Research, write and prepare position papers, reports and submissions on relevant issues which will positively impact on improving the quality of and access to occupational health in line with the Faculty’s Advocacy Strategy.

▪ Prepare policy papers, briefings and position papers to inform the Board.

▪ Analyse and assess relevant new and emerging policy and research papers for their impact on the implementation of the Faculty Advocacy Strategy.

▪ Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key occupational health internal and external stakeholders.

▪ Liaise with members and stakeholders to facilitate their active engagement in the Faculty’s Advocacy Strategy and associated advocacy work.

▪ Contribute to the Faculty’s external communication, by writing articles for the RCPI website, newsletters and other relevant publications.

▪ Attend and actively contribute at committee meetings.

▪ To carry out any other duties related to the implementation of the Faculty’s Advocacy Strategy in line with the purpose of the post.
